finish marker and a terrible explosion that was so loud it deafened everything. the shockwaves must have hit my body and my legs started going like noodles and i few i was going down. >> he got back up, though, and finished the race. he then walked back to his hotel. >> poll shows the majority of americans are still worried a if deal about the possibility of a future terrorist attack. if a march poll 63 percent of americans say they are worried about an attack, a pew poll taken in january found that 71 percent of americans say defending the united states from terrorist attacks should be a top priority for the obama administration. the issue of national security has been a top priority for at least 70 percent of americans since the poll has been taken which started in 2002. >> the i.r.s. says boston area taxpayers will get an extension on filing their federal tax returns. taxes were due today in

massachusetts because yesterday was a state holiday for them. >> google is praised for its action in the minutes after the bombings, the internet giant created a link called "person finder" where you enter names and contact information about runners and people along the racecourse for the public to view so you can get information and give information. the service came in handy because cell phone service because nonexistent for several hours after the explosion. >> you can show your support for the people of boston through a badge posting on your facebook that reads "our hearts go to everyone in boston and each person with loved ones running in the marathon." >> breaking news from the south bay where a house fire turned deadly. a young victim is a 15-year-old girl trapped in the burning building. two others were injured. >> abc7 news reporter cornell

bernard is live on that story. >> heartbreaking for the family living in this home on north 5th street across the street from the japanese american museum in downtown san jose. we have learned that the girl who lost her life is seven-year-old mariah gomez. her family wanted to us share this photograph with you. the call came if last night about 11:30 that an outbuilding on the property was on fire, the rear of the house. firefighters realized someone was trapped inside the structure. it took ten minutes to knock the fire down and when they went inside they found the body of the seven-year-old girl inside. firefighters say the four-year-old sister was sleeping and escaped with her hair burning. she hospitalized. she will problem of. her grandmother said a few minutes ago she cannot believe her beautiful granddaughter is gone. >> she was a little girl, she

was everything to me. now she is gone. i usually pick her up every weekend. i guess this weekend i will not pick her up. >> her grandmother says that she was a beautiful little girl would loved singing, dancing, and god's good grace. >> firefighters have just left and their investigation is just going how the fire bedan. it is not known if there were smoke detectors in the outbuild ing. >> new details in another deadly fire in san jose that break out at 8:30 last night on south daniel way, officials are now saying the fire claimed the lives of would people, an elderly woman pulled from the home but died later and a man whose body was found in the rubble. no word on the oil of either victim. >> iranian-state run tv reports

device. >> people were afraid to go upstairs because it was more than 25 stories. we just got word they found another explosive device in a different hotel so the hotel started we taking in people off the street because they were telling people to get inside. it was very somber and upsetting because it went from being an amazing and exciting and positive day to heartbreaking. >> april did not find out about the bombings until she got text messages and facebook questions about it from her friends. security is tightened including at the golden gate bridge, and the police chief says the officers are out in force and bart police will not talk about any specific security plans but they say passengers should expect to see more security on trains and platforms.

into the boston marathon bombings. national guard troops are patrolling downtown boston. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack that killed three people and injured 145. >> good tuesday morning. >> thanks for joining us. we will take you live to the f.b.i. news conference when it begins but right now security is tight in downtown boston as we wait to be briefed on yesterday's deadly bombings at the boston marathon. >> businesses surrounding the site are closed and airports are on alert with special attention being paid to those traveling to international destinations. >> and a photo is released of a bombing victim, 8-year-old martin richard killed while watching his father take part in the race. a single candle was lit in front of the home where he lived. >> a little boy from martinez was one of many injured

supporting his mother in the race. amy hollyfield is live at martinez junior high school, where he attended. >> he is okay in i.c.u. in stable condition and the flag is at half staff to remember those who died in yesterday's explosion. he is going to be okay. he is in boston's children hospital. he is 11. he was severely wounded by shrapnel that pierced his leg and his thigh and his hip. he was at the finish line to want his mom finish the race. he was there with his dad. she was a few hundred yards away when the bomb went off. >> the father found his son when three came down from the bleepers and he was on the ground. >> friends thought of the family when the bomb want off.

he was so excited about the trip. making the situation more stressful yesterday, friends say that his dad was not allowed to ride if the ambulance with him and for a while his parents didn't know which hospital he was in. his mom wrote last night on facebook he had surgery yesterday and he is in the i.c.u. in stable condition. she says that he will be in the hospital probably another seven to ten days and he has a few more surgeries he has to have and one scheduled for tomorrow. >> 6:32. in the aftermath of the bombing, abc7 news spoke by phone with several bay area runners who just finished the race, one is a well-known marathoner from ross at the exact spot of one bomb 20 minutes before it went off. >> this was a wave of terror and people did not know where to turn or what was safe. it was a numbness and it was

surreal. >> very somber and upsetting, really, because it went from being an amazing and exciting and positive day to heartbreaking. >> april is one of many who traveled from the bay area to run in the prestigious race. >> california police agencies are in a state of heightened alert and they are asking all of us to be vigilant. in a statement the california highway patrol says we urge the public to report to law enforcement anything that appears out of the ordinary. the c.h.p. says that it has an effective process for handling any threats and orange woulds closely with other ages to coordinate a response. >> security has been stepped up in the bay area because of the boston blast and the a's and warriors played in oakland last note with a visible increase in security. the fans at warriors game went through the metals detectors and

a's fanned had their bags searched. and behind-the-scenes, bomb sniffing dogs were used. >> clip posted on youtube was shot in the viewing stand across from where the first bomb had gone off in boston. >> again, this video of the second bomb is new this morning and you can see at first people were just stunned and eventually someone started shouting orders to "get out of the stands" and smoke filled the area and people emptyied the stands quick limit. >> another perspective of the blast. we have a runners' view seconds before the explosion. can you see on the left side of the screen the woman was wearing a camera on her head when the bomb went off and she was not

hurt but, obviouslies she took cough at that point and did not finish the race. >> we are standing by for the fbi briefing that will occur any moment. we will get you that. right now, look outside, you cannot tell it is more still or quiet but it is this morning. >> not a lot of brambles from the branches flying around. >> good morning, everyone, live doppler 7 hd shows how dry it is. the latest advisoryies show the delta community is where we have a wind advisory at 9:00, so in 2 1/2 hours through 5:00. what can you expect during that time? a northwest wind sustained at 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 35 to 40 miles per hour. over the water, though, we will have issues also. small craft advisory from 1:00 o'clock to 9:00 as winds are at 20 to 30 miles per hour creating difficult situations.

good morning, i'm george stephanopoulos in boston and we're joining you news because law enforcement officials are about to hold a press briefing here in boston telling us what they know and what they are doing in the wake of those two explosions yesterday, shortly before 3:00 p.m. at the boston marathon. two explosions 12 seconds apart. right now we know at these three are dead. more than 140 injured including 17 critically.

i'm here with brian ross and martha raddatz and, brian, we now know that the fbi is in charge of this investigation. >> they have taken the lead in the investigation. they called it potential terrorism. they have yet not enough evidence to tell whether it's domestic terrorism, international terrorism but looking for all kinds of clues in the videos that were taken by witnesses and also the clues of what the explosive was made out of which can be helpful in determining the signature of the bombmaker. >> their first press conference yesterday they were asking residents of boston to send in any video they had and would comb through it. martha raddatz, one of the interesting factors there was no specific threat coming in before the marathon. >> there were no specific threats whatsoever. it was just a beautiful day in boston. the boston marathon, of course, we had national guard there and a lot of police presence, but nothing indicating any sort of terrorist attack or any kind of attack. >> okay, we see the officials walking in right now. we know that governor deval

patrick and mayor tom menino is there serving in his 20th year and joined by the police commissioner ed davis and fbi special agent in charge and several others including massachusetts senator elizabeth warren as they gather. we're hoping to learn more about it. >> act of terror yesterday, we wanted to organize a briefing with you and the information we have. the mayor is here. the members of our congressional delegation, all of the law enforcement leadership. we have several people who want to present to you this morning and take your questions. a couple points i want to mention at the outset. i told you yesterday that the fbi has taken charge of the investigation, special agent in charge, rick deloria will speak shortly. it's important to clarify that

two and only two explosive guises were found yesterday. other parcels, all other parcels in the area of the blast have been examined but there are no unexploded bombs. there were no unexploded explosive devices found. over 150 people were injured yesterday in the blast. some gravely. our thoughts go out to all of those injured and killed and to their families and friends. i personally want to thank the extraordinary first responders for their just extraordinary work yesterday. every single one of them, those on site and those who got to the site promptly thereafter performed beautifully as have the area hospitals and i've been calling around to the heads of the hospitals personally though thank them as well. it's our hope that tomorrow we will organize an interfaith prayer service to help our

community heal. we don't have details on that yet but will provide those details when we have them. there's a support center that was opened yesterday in what we call the castle opposite the park plaza hotel on or ling ton and stuart street, he think it is. the mayor and his -- have provided staff to help people cope with this extraordinary event and it will be open from 9:00, until i think 5:00 or beyond this evening. finally, everyone should expect continued heightened police presence and everyone should continue personally to be vigilant. the investigation continues and until it is done, all of those in law enforcement represented by the leaders here will be present in force in the area around the palace and throughout the city and with that, let me turn it over to mayor menino. >> thank you, governor.

yesterday terror was brought to the city of boston. tragedy was brought to one of our neighborhoods also. this is a close-knit place, the city of boston. here we know our neighbors and grieve for them. grieve for the little boy who we knew from dorchester but also today i want to say we know our heroes also. they are the men and women who wear helmets, the badges, the runners that helped us yesterday during this time of need and as we go together on this issue with all the law enforcement officials, we're going to make sure the city pulls together. now we got it under control. let's it into work together. let's keep offering our helping hands to individuals who might need it during this very difficult time in our city's history. i say to all of you, i've been the mayor for 20 years now, i've never seen law enforcement pull together working together to

willing to work together to make it a better place for all our people. as we gather today with all our officials let's say boston will overcome. >> imagine you, mr. mayor. senator. >> thank you, governor. thank you, mr. mayor. the president of the united states has pledged his full support in all efforts, supposed to keep the city safe and to find the person who did this and bring them to justice. we did not have to reach out to the president. the president reached out to us. he called the governor, he called the mayor. he called the members of the delegation because the president is actively involved here and responding. on behalf of our congressional delegation, senator cowan is here with me and congressman lynch and all of the members of our delegation. we want to extend our thanks to the first responders, to the firefighters, to the police officers, to the ems, to everyone on the scene including the volunteers who came and

helped those in trouble and helped save lives. we also want to thank those from all around the country and all around the world whose prayers and thoughts and offers of help have pored in. we are deeply grateful. as the mayor said boston will survive. >> thank you, governor. i'm rick deloria. i would like to start this morning by thanking the first responders from boston ems and boston fire department and the volunteer physicians, nurses and medical staff from the community have volunteered at the marathon. their services and heroic actions saved lives. we continue to work shoulder to shoulder with our partners at the police department and massachusetts state police as well at our other agencies. our mess is clear to bring to justice those responsible for the marathon bombing. the american public wants

answers and the citizens of the city of boston and commonwealth want and deserve answers. this group of dedicated men and women standing before you pledge to do everything possible to get those answers. this remains a very active investigation. our ongoing investigation in various locations throughout the area goes on however there are no known additional threats. we process the crime scene which could take some time. the citizens of massachusetts and the city of boston should expect to see the fbi and its jttf partners conducting investigative activity in the greater eastern massachusetts and boston area. assistance from the public remains critical in establishing a time line of events which leads to swift conclusion through due diligence and strong investigative activity. we commend the public. we commend the citizens of boston and the citizens of the commonwealth of massachusetts for the information that has been provided to law enforcement so far and we strongly encourage

that assistance to continue. it is paramount to explain the fbi and our jttf role to a greater extent. the volume of tips we receive and we received voluminous tips over the last 18 hours. we have staffed our 1-800-call-fbi tip line and into encourage people to call it with tips and bringing additional victim stinls and resources from our headquarters components in other field offices to boston and they are on site working what's speak processing evidence at the crime scene. to the extent that the crime scene still plays in copley perimeter and still continuing to be a crime scene it may be that for the next several days. we are following up on a variety of leads and see us and our partners interviewing maybe your neighbor or co-worker or yourself. please cooperate with law enforcement authorities. the resources, the fbi, the jttf

allow for swift action which hopefully will yield quick results but that does not diminish our diligence and leads that we are processing. we are just beginning upon that path. thank you very much. >> i'm gene marquez acting special agent in charge, atf boston field division. at this time atf has been a partial nrt, national response team activation and bringing our explosives experts to the scene's working jointly with the fbi and on the scene and we have certified explosives specialists and enforcement officers and special agent bomb texts and canines that are trained to detect any explosive devices or any residue. at this time we have approximate ly 30 forensic specialists en route on the scene and to dispel

any rumors, there were -- there were rumors floating around there were up to seven devices up to one point. that is not true. i think that happened as a result of some suspect packages that were disrupted. but we only had two devices that we're aware of and both those were involved in the -- and did the damage and were involved in the incident. we are looking for the public's cooperation. if there's any video, any photographic evidence contact the fbi hot line or the city's hot line we'd like to review any kind of media you have out there that might give us additional investigative leads and pursuing them at this time. the keen is going to take several days to process and ask for your patience as we're working in that area and for your cooperation. >> good morning.

this. and i can't begin to thank everyone who has been involved. law enforcement, medical professionals, emergency responders and really just regular citizens who became heroes yesterday. i want to repeat as i did state it yesterday this is an active and it's an ongoing investigation but rest assured we are bringing all of the necessary resources to assist in this matter and that we will conduct all that we can with all of our law enforcement partners. i've been in touch with the attorney general several times eric holder and he has pledged all the resources from the department and others on behalf of the federal government to help us and recover from yesterday. i ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to pursue leads together, evidence and to get to the bottom of who did this and why. thank you.

>> good morning, i'm ed davis, police commissioner for the city of boston of we are in the process of securing and processing the most complex crime scene that we've dealt with in the history of our department. we are doing that under the direction of the fbi and in partnership with the atf. we secured the perimeter with members of the national guard and generals here and thank the people working closely with us and received assistance from chicago, los angeles, units have responded here from new york city and baltimore and we are working very closely with all of our partners on this complex investigation. i want to stress that the area around the crime scene which was yesterday was 15 blocks has been reduced to about 12 blocks at this point in time and will to collapse that crime scene as the facts and circumstances make that available and want to open
